Help! I cant get my knob off!!!!

Can anyone help me with a very simple task? I got my v40 sport about two weeks ago and am in the process of tidying it up a bit, the gear lever gaiter only had one clip still attached so i managed to get a nearly new one from volvo world (thanks to the guy who mentioned them on here!) any way the problem is i cant get the old one off!!!!!!!! its probably so easy il kick myself when I get an answer! is it the lift reverse or normal gearbox or automatic? if its the normal slide to the right to reverse (m56) its fairly easy, check link:

If you have a replacement you can damage the old one. It may just be a friction fit, so get a piece of wood and place it on the underside and give it a good smack with a hammer.
