Noise when monitoring track

MessageAuthor

I've been using Reaper for about a year. I've been using a JamLab to connect my guitar or bass and using plug-ins for effects. I just purchased a used modeling amp and want to record using it instead of the plug-ins. I tried plugging the record-out into the JamLab but I have to turn the amp up to about 10 to get a good signal. Not a terrible thing but accidentally pulling the cord out of the record-out in the middle of the night with the amp set to ten isn't something I want to experience. I connected the amp record-out to the mic input on the computer and get a great sound and volume but it doesn't seem to be connected to Reaper at all. I can close Reaper and still hear the guitar. If I open Reaper and add a track, arm it and monitor it I get a horrible sound that seems to get worse as I play the guitar but I can't really hear the guitar from the start. I feel like it is a signal routing issue but I can't figure it out. I've looked at the Reaper manual and searched here and online. My sound card is an integrated SoundMax digital audio card in a Dell desktop. I'm also using ASIO4All. My hardware is old but I'm not trying to record entire songs or anything just a track or two. Sorry if this is something really obvious. Here is a screen shot of my Reaper device preferences and my ASIO4all control panel. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks, Don

The title should actually read when "noise when a track is armed". Here is a link to a short video that may help too. Thanks, Don

when you say you get a great sound and volume, you mean from the amp or from the speakers connected to the pc? I'm not expert but it's the first time I hear of someone connecting his amp right into the pc. Do you have to put an adaptor to the amp's wire to be able to connect it to the pc? If so, it's a good clue that you're doing something wrong.

It's the "record out" from the amp, that's what it's for. But the issue doesn't have anything to do with the amp. The only change I made was selecting the integrated sound card instead of the JamLab for the input. It happens whether I have anything plugged in or not. It would be the same if I wanted to plug a mic into the mic input on the back of the computer and record a vocal track. Reaper is not seeing the mic as the input, I just can't figure out how to make it use that as the input. Thanks for the reply. I'll keep looking, I'm sure it's something simple I'm must missing.

the record out of your amp i think should be connected to a "line in" input. the mic input is probably saturated by the volume of the noise coming from your amp... all is fine in your reaper settings as far as i can see from your vid and pic.

I've tried the mic and line-in. But like I said even with nothing plugged in at all I still get the noise. In the video you can see when I click on the ARM button the meter jumps right away and the noise starts. I had nothing plugged in when I did that video. The noise sounds like feedback with a loud clicking. Maybe it's not possible to do what I want with the hardware I have. The JamLab works great with just a guitar. I don't understand why I have to turn the record-out volume up so high on the amp when using it when a passive guitar provided plenty of signal. And plugging the record-out into the mic or line-in on the computer I don't have to turn the volume up on the amp much past 2 to get plenty of volume. Thanks for the input. Don

After trying to get the internal sound card to work for a while I gave up and went back to trying to use the JamLab. And for some reason it now works. I only have to turn the amp to about 2 to get plenty of signal. The only thing that I did differently was turn the input gain down in the JabLab control panel. But now I can turn it back up to 10 and it still works fine. I don't know. Just glad it's working, thanks for all the input. Don
