Help out a beginner please!

MessageAuthor

I couldnt hear anything wrong with this mix at all ,except maybe its own exceptional clarity could work against it maybe? ...I dont know much about Jethro Tull ,but i could definitely hear a bit of Cat Stevens in your voice who i think has one of the finest vocals in folk music, or it could be you its close!!! . Even though im a punk industrial techno rock head .This is an immense production and a great song, if its mix is not spot on ...its seriously not that far off target thats for sure. Great Work Gaz I.O.N

My first thought - what have you been doing since 2006 Alistair? :D I think it sounds great - a really nice song. Things I would try if I were tinkering with this would be to low pass the bass a bit and hi-pass the guitar a fraction to get them out each others way in the lower mids. I think I might try and find a bit smoother treatment for the vox so that the vox is a bit more natural sounding. I like that very dry, heavily compresed (I think) sound that Steve Earle uses on his quieter material (c.f. Lonelier than This on spotify as an example) Lastly I think it could do with a bit of air in the higher frequencies - the shaker is very noticeable for balancing that out a bit so maybe you could make more of the shaker part? Mainly though it just sounds terrific.
