SansAmp PSA-1/Can I record dry, then send through this?

MessageAuthor

Hey all, I'm looking into getting the Digi001 (waiting till NAMM ends to see if they roll out Digi002) and this SansAmp PSA-1 plug in. My question is: can I record my electric guitar straight into PT, no amp or anything, then send signal through PSA? I'm thinking that if the original performace is totally dry, no distortion even, then I have totally flexibility with the sound. Does this work? Thanks, Rand

Hi Rand, I have the software and hardware versions of the PSA-1 and yes, you can record your signal dry and then use the PSA-1 plugin as an insert. It sounds great but alot of the presets are noisy. I always use the hardware version with an outboard comp/gate which kills the noise before entering PTLE. I mainly record very heavy guitars though so that's why it gets noisy. Marc

Cool. Thanks. Is there a noise gate in ProTools? Can't remember. If so, have you ever tried that instead? Does it suck in comparison? Maybe I should go with outboard myself. I also do heavy guitars.

Marc, Do you record dry as well, then send out/back in? Might go that route. Why do you have both software and hardware versions? Like to spend money?

Yes I do like to spend money. Who doesn't? I bought the Bombfactory bundle and it came with the PSA-1 plugin. I bought it for the other plugins though. With the hardware unit I always record wet but if i haven't exactly decided on the guitar sound that I want I record dry and then use the plugin. Like I said before though, that's usually only if i'm going to use a clean or mildly distorted sound. For Meshuggah-like, bone cracking distortion it's always the outboard stuff because of the noise.
